Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

As a fan of Lauren Lane’s articles, I was interested in “Tim Tebow MVP of Snoozefest Super Bowl” (Feb. 6) but was soon disappointed with her narrative of the halftime show performer Bruno Mars.

Lane labels Bruno Mars as “the massive pop star who ironically stands at only 5’5 was an unexpected choice because he would be joining the ranks of industry superstars.”

This quote is bothersome two different reasons.

One there is no need to add his height and make a commentary about it. There are plenty of male superstars who are Mars’ height or shorter and in other news outlets this is not newsworthy, as his height has no value towards his musical talent.

Second, Bruno Mars is already an industry superstar, his past two albums, Doo-Wops & Hooligans and Unorthodox Jukebox, went double platinum. He has won Grammy Awards, Brit Awards, MTV Music Awards, and Billboard Awards. He is prominent in the music industry with his musical talents and producing abilities.

Another quote that was unsettling was when Lane said “he delivered a mixture of entertainment assault and James Brown meets Michael Jackson type dance moves.”

The use of “assault” should not be used lightly as the Oxford definition of assault is a physical attack. By using the word in this context it can lessen the meaning, unless she means that Bruno Mars was actually attacking her through the television screen by performing on the Super Bowl, otherwise “assault” should not be used for something as mundane as watching television.

I recognize how Lane found the Super Bowl boring and hard to watch, but it was unprofessional to take her anger out on Bruno Mars who was the best part of the night.

Sincerely,
