While most, if not all, colleges have a foreign language requirement, Simmons’ requirement to reach the 201 level of a language seems overly strict.
As a transfer student from a college that required only one year of a language that I was exempt from at my last school, I have now been forced to take three semesters of a language after not studying one in three years. Many other transfer students are in the same predicament.
Struggling through three courses that have nothing to do with my major and often require more work than the classes in that major is not what I had in mind when I decided to come to Simmons.
Having a basic grasp of a second language should be mandatory; however students should decide for themselves if they are passionate or skilled enough to move onto more advanced levels. Simmons should require only two years of a foreign language.
Sincerely,
Haley Costen
