“Humans of Simmons” is a new feature which highlights the students and faculty at Simmons College. Based off of Brandon Stanton’s artwork and novels, the Voice and OSLA collaborated on capturing the stories of the community on Oct. 1, 2015. There will be other events held during the year for more people to get a chance to be interviewed.
“Seven years ago I had to withdraw from what I thought was my dream college due to severe depression and anxiety. I thought that I’d never be able to go back to school again, let alone full-time. Then I started at Simmons, and now I’ve completed five semesters full-time and I’m in my last semester and about to graduate. And I have a real life outside of school too. I never thought I’d get to this point and I’m pretty proud of myself!”
“Today (Oct. 1) is the two-year anniversary of my dad’s passing. He was a big influence into me coming here—he really pushed me into being a better person and it’s kind of sad because he passed away before I could even decide where I wanted to go. It’s kind of a big deal for me to be here and just represent him. I just recently got a tattoo, kind of as a memoriam to him so it’s like he’s here with me while I’m doing this journey.”
“I was always really protective of my hair because I thought that once you’ve changed it you can never go back, which is kind of true cause I’m not going back. Within the first month of coming here to Simmons, just the colorful people and personalities here, just touched me. My first-year class almost all have some kind of color in their hair now cause of one amazing girl who started out with green hair and she just turned all of us over. A bunch of my friend group [has] been doing this fun thing together since. It’s kind of been a defining Simmons quality.”
“I’m 27 years old and I still love this teddy bear cup that I’ve had for a long time. I drink coffee in it every morning on my way to school and it’s what helps me get through my day.”
