COF events need better coverage

After three years at Simmons College I have attended a total of one COF event. This event was the COF carnival on a Saturday in 2013 and was conveniently held on the Simmons residence quad. I learned of the event from looking out the window when I heard noise and only attended because of it.

I have spoken to students from the COF schools and have heard the same sentiment many times over. COF students want larger-scale events that interest them.

“I went to the block party freshman year and have not attended an event since. I never know when or what types of events they are having but my friends said they were lame so I don’t bother,” said  Michael Vankevich, Wentworth Institute of Technology ‘15.

Students are unaware of the events that are happening. More importantly, students who do know about them are not interested in attending. With a combined totally of almost 15,000 undergrads attending the five COF schools, there is a large audience that deserves their opinions to be heard.

This begs the questions: What should the COF do? What kind of events should they hold? How should they advertise them?

Some students are in favor of the idea of cutting down the number of COF events in favor of one large event a year. This large event would take the form of a spring concert featuring a popular artist. The event would be funded by the COF, but could be supplemented through ticket sales if necessary. Students said that, for the right artist, they would be willing to pay for a ticket.

“I think there should be a concert in the spring!” said Sara Parisky, Simmons College ‘15.

Many large schools do this annually, but COF schools could not do it on their own. This is the reason the COF was formed; the COF should not waste money on cotton candy and talent shows.

As for advertising the event, students would like to receive emails and see signage on their respective campuses. Social media is also a way to reach students, but they suggest having each school post about the event because many do not follow any COF pages.

COF students are tired of boring events and are demanding that their money be used in a way they will enjoy. Sacrificing smaller events for one larger one a year will satisfy student demands.
