T-minus 28 Days: Two great movies to enjoy as the countdown to Thanksgiving begins

By Jessie Kuenzel

First of all, Happy Halloween!

But now, as sad as it might make us, it is time to move on and set our sights to other fabulous holidays. Next up on the roster: Thanksgiving.

There is a plethora of wonderful Halloween movies, and an even wider selection of winter-holiday movies, but poor Thanksgiving is sandwiched between two movie-heavy holidays and often falls by the cinematic wayside.

In an effort to pay homage to the turkey-and-family filled holiday that we will soon be enjoying, I present to you two of the best Thanksgiving-themed movies to have ever graced the silver screen. Remember: it’s quality, not quantity, that matters.

#1 “Planes, Trains and Automobiles”

This 1987 comedy, starring Steve Martin and John Candy, focuses on the hilariously frantic attempts of one businessman to return home to his family for Thanksgiving.

Heralded as a classic by many, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” is a wonderfully light and uplifting comedy that will definitely bring a smile to your face and a holiday spirit to your heart.

#2 “Home for the Holidays”

Directed by Jodie Foster, and boasting a star studded cast, “Home for the Holidays” is a  very underrated Thanksgiving movie that deserves much more praise than it currently receives.

Robert Downey Jr., Holly Hunter, and Claire Daines all play their roles as family so convincingly that it’s hard to believe they aren’t actually related. The family dynamics are so well-developed that the mother/daughter and sister/brother drama that arises is, while completely hilarious, also totally believeable.
