Simmons College’s Julie Saltamartini (East Hampstead, N.H.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 12-18, it was announced today by the league. The honor marks the fourth time in her career that she has earned the accolade.
Saltamartini tallied 11 points on five goals and an assist during a 2-0 week for the Sharks. The junior registered multi-goal efforts in both matches, including her second hat trick of the season. The forward began the week with a pair of goals and an assist in the team’s 8-2 victory over visiting Wheelock College on Sept. 13, and she capped the week with three goals in a 6-0 triumph over GNAC foe Mount Ida College on Sept. 17.
For the season, Saltamartini ranks second among conference leaders with 19 points and nine goals in addition to an assist in six matches. She also stands 14th in the nation with 3.17 points per game and 10th with 1.5 goals per outing. On Sept. 8, the junior scored four goals against Nichols College on Sept. 8 to tie a school record and rank as the third-highest goal-scoring output in a match by any player in Division III this season.
The Pinkerton Academy graduate has started 32 of 42 matches in her career at Simmons and ranks second on the school’s all-time list for points with 90 and goals with 41. She also has eight lifetime assists and nine career game-winning markers. Saltamartini was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association/Longstreth New England East Region First Team last year after being named the GNAC Offensive Player of the Year and landing a spot on the GNAC First Team. She burst onto the collegiate field hockey scene as a first-year, and was named the GNAC Rookie of the Year, while being tabbed First Team All-Conference by the league.
Simmons has won four straight matches and owns a 4-2 record, including 1-0 in GNAC play. The Sharks returned to action on Tuesday, Sept. 20, when they traveled to Norton, Mass. and took on Wheaton College in a 7 p.m. match.
