Students will have to have their ID in order to attend class in the Park Science Building.

Public Safety recently announced that access to classrooms and laboratories will be by card access only. Lobbies will still be accessible without a card.

“We have continuously improved security throughout the academic and residence campuses over the last several years,” said Director of Public Safety Sean Collins. “Some improvements have been to remain current with best practices and some were as a result of incidents.”

An administrative newsletter explained the change is a result of the need to secure laboratories, expensive lab equipment and lab animals, as well as providing a more secure environment for faculty, staff, and students.

Beginning March 24 and continuing through implementation, security personnel will be available in the event someone forgets their Simmons ID.

“We will determine how long security will be present to assist those who forget their ID based upon need and staffing levels,” said Collins. “I do not anticipate a lengthy learning curve.”

Students have always been advised to carry their Simmons ID card with them at all times on campus.
