MBTA investigating train derailment

By Haley Costen
Staff Writer

The first car of an MBTA Green Line trolley crashed into a tunnel wall after derailing just west of Kenmore Station last Monday afternoon, according to the Boston Globe.

Seven people suffered minor injuries and were sent to the hospital after the crash, with more people on the trolley behind it complaining of back pain after it slammed to a stop to avoid rear-ending the derailed train.

The derailment occurred between the Fenway and Kenmore stations, according to a tweet by fire department officials.

Buses replaced C Line trains from Kenmore to St. Marys Street Station and the D Line trains from Kenmore to Fenway for the rest of the day, according to the Boston Globe.

Regular Green Line service resumed on the C and D lines early Tuesday morning, according to CBS.

The MBTA has not found any problems with the signal system, or the train or tracks, so it is focusing on the trolley driver, who CBS reported is Sydley Gardner.

Gardner has had 20 moving violations since 1994, according to CBS. Some of those violations include seven counts of speeding, and failure to stop on five different occasions.

Gardner was also fired in 2010, but had the case overturned. Gardner was fired because he failed to report that he had struck a woman when he was operating a Green Line trolley Sept. 5, 2010, according to the Boston Globe.

According to the Boston Globe, Gardner has been on leave while the MBTA investigates the crash.
