Soirée is less than two weeks away, which means Simmons students are on the lookout for formal wear. Last season was dominated by strong 80s-inspired shoulders and ruffles, but this spring is offering up softer, more feminine inspiration for formal wear.
Check out some of the latest trends in formal wear in preparation for your big night:
1. Lilac
Say goodbye to millennial pink and hello to lilac, the hottest color of 2018. Lilac appeared in the runway shows for the likes of Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham, and Michael Kors. In addition to being the perfect color to welcome the spring season, this pastel hue works with dresses, jumpsuits, and menswear.
2. Velvet
Your mother’s favorite fabric isn’t going anywhere soon. Look out for velvet accents and prints on dresses. The velvet adds a touch of sophistication and retro glamour without going over the top. Wearing a fit-and-flare dress, as shown below, brings this trend to modern day standards.
3. 60s Debutante
Dior and Oscar De La Renta, fashion brands that have become household names, featured tulle and tutu skirts in their Spring 2018 fashion shows. Floral prints, while nothing new for the spring season, are coming back in the form of big 60s-inspired patterns. Combine the two trends and be the belle of the ball in a retro-inspired dress your grandmother would definitely approve of.
4. Pastel Suits
Pretty pastels aren’t just for dresses. Think less of the powder blue tuxedo your dad rented for prom and more of a jumpsuit that Rihanna would wear. Keep this look modern by looking for jumpsuits or jackets with clean, structured lines and pairing them with sleek accessories and shoes with a heel.
5. High-low Dresses
This trend was all the rage back in high school and it’s back in style for 2018. Not only is this popping up in prom stores across the country, but it can also be found in stores catering to an older demographic. This trend is a perfect balance of classy and sexy, adding an interesting element to an otherwise plain dress.
