Dear Editor:
In early April 2013, the Simmons Speaks Poetry Organization competed in the College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI) in New York City. Simmons ranked number 6 in the entire competition, consisting of 59 teams from around the country.
Although the team does exceedingly well in competitions and has made Simmons a prominent name within slam poetry society, Simmons Speaks is still an unrecognized group within the college.
Because of this, the team receives no funds from the school and must fundraise on its own in order to compete. Melissa Lozada-Oliva a member of the team has organized an online fundraiser so that supporters can donate to help the team go to Colorado to compete in CUPSI again.
This amazing team isn’t getting the support it deserves from the very school its members represent with their award-winning poetry.
Until this team is recognized by the school as group by the student government, it’s up to the rest of us to support our poets so they may bring Simmons a first place title in slam poetry.
Fondly,
Eva Weber
