The Sharks Swimming and Diving team defeated Plymouth State University (N.H.) 179-98 in their last dual meet of the season before the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships.
First-year Miriam Swisher earned first-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard backstroke. Swisher achieved a career milestone, breaking the 20-year-old record of 55.89 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle with 55.49. The record was previously held by Regis College.
“[She] has been a huge contributor for Simmons all season,” said Head Coach Mindy Williams.
Sharks senior Amy Davis placed first in the 200-yard freestyle and 50-yard butterfly, while senior Jen Collins also clinched first in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley.
Junior Chloe Davis earned first place in the 50-yard breaststroke while first-year Maggie Kirby won the 200-yard butterfly, first-year Shylee Steward finished on top in the 50-yard free, and first-year Jordan Mattheisen won the 200-yard breaststroke.
“They raced well and were competitive, and we approached the meet as an opportunity to practice good racing habits,” said Williams. “A rehearsal for the main event.”
With a 10-2 record, the Sharks look ahead to their final event of the season, New Englands, which are Feb. 14-16, at the University of Rhode Island. Last year, the team finished in eighth place.
“This has been a big year for Simmons Swimming and Diving. New Englands will be no exception! We’re planning to spend some time on that podium,” said Williams.
