Professor of Economics Dr. Niloufer Sohrabji has stepped into the position of Director of General Education, succeeding Professor Sheldon George.
This announcement came in an email sent to students and faculty on July 10, announcing the new director of the Honors Program Dr. Anna Aguilera as well.
Starting her career at Simmons in 1999, Sohrabji has been involved in various aspects of the university, including being a member of the Administrative Board and co-chair of the 2020 accreditation self-study. Most recently, she has been the Chair of the Economics Department and Director and Coordinator of the Economics Internship Program.
On the Simmons University website, Sohrabji shared that she became an educator “because she wanted to share this knowledge and inspire her students to make a positive difference in the world.” She has earned various accolades for her approach to teaching, such as the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Professor of the Year Award.
In a statement to The Voice, Sohrabji shared that the general education program “encompasses the humanities, social sciences, and sciences is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills for personal and professional development.”
“[Sohrajbi] wants all her students to succeed… and she really emphasizes that so much,” said Isheeta Krishna, a Finance and Economics double major. Krishna has also personally had Sohrabji as her major advisor for her Economics double major. Sohrabji also acts as an advisor to first-years and Economics minors.
Simmons students will see more of Sohrabji in this role once fall semester begins. Stepping into this new role, Sohrabji expressed that “it is important to [her] to ensure that the program meets the students’ needs and expectations and offers an intellectually engaging and meaningful experience that will help students accomplish their professional goals.”
