Simmons College Radio was among the five finalists nation-wide for the “Best Internet-Only Station” and “Best Use of Social Media” categories at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Annual Conference.
The conference was held March 7-9 in the heart of New York City for the purpose of helping college radio stations grow in quality and experience. The conference tries to connect the future voices of radio with valuable resources and experienced industry professionals. It is a great opportunity for personal and team growth as well as networking.
“One of my favorite parts of the conference was meeting with musicians and talking about how to create better partnerships between stations and musicians,” said Amelia Cordischi, Simmons College Radio Manager.
The conference had numerous panels on topics varying from “Women in Media,” to “How to create a Talk Show that Counts,” and “Developing your on-air voice.”
“We talked about different ways to get listeners involved and interested in the station,” said Caroline Qualey, a sophomore at Simmons and active member of the radio station.
After the day was done, when the panels had ended and the awards had gone to their rightful places, students explored Times Square with wide eyes and a great deal of laughter.
Five Simmons representatives attended along with Communications Professor Len Mailloux, a board member of IBS and the Simmons College Radio adviser.
Simmons found a new friend, Nasser Eledroos, of the Wentworth College Radio station. Together, the group even got to stage-door Adele Dazeem, whoops, Idina Menzel!
Simmons College Radio Station is only five years old, but already has so much to boast about. With the leadership of Mailloux and the energy, commitment, and enthusiasm of the radio team, it is recognized as one of the best college radio stations in the country.
