Shark Week provides fun and prizes

Last week the College celebrated its fourth annual Shark Week.

The week’s events kicked off on Monday with a cake-cutting ceremony and photographs with Stormy the Shark in the Student Activities Center, followed by a cake decorating competition in Bartol that night.

“Over 20 teams competed,” said Tia Miller, assistant director of Student Leadership and Activities. “Everyone’s had smiling faces.”

The fun continued on Tuesday with a “shark hunt” on the academic and residential campuses. Students who found mini sharks hidden throughout Simmons turned them in to the Office of Student Leadership and Activities (OSLA) for prizes like stuffed animal sharks.

Wednesday’s Shark Week activity was Casino Night. Bartol was converted into a casino that offered students the opportunity to try their hand at blackjack, poker, roulette, and craps for prizes like coffee mugs, Simmons gear, and an Alex and Ani bracelet.

“Casino night was really cool,” sophomore Fernanda Tapias Rosa said. “They set it up really well.”

On Thursday students went to Bartol in their pajamas fot the “breakfast for dinner”-themed night and watched Monsters University on the projectors. Students also could take home a mini cereal box decorated with a picture of them and Stormy.

The Shark Week activities came to an end on Friday with “shark laser tag” on the residence quad—a student favorite according to Miller. However, students also received 10 percent off all Simmons gear at the Bookstore for wearing Simmons gear or blue and gold.
