As you wrap up the invitations and find recipes for Thanksgiving 2024, you want to make sure everything else is in place such as making the guests feel welcomed, rubbing shoulders and finding something meaningful to say that you’re grateful for when you go around the table. As someone who has trouble with talking to new people, I know that it can be anxiety-provoking. Not knowing what to say, let alone knowing what to start with is hard. I have thought of some conversations to help ease the tension at the dinner table.
Politics
As the presidential election is in the same month, it’s fitting to talk about everything political. If you want to (pumpkin) spice it up, add in religion.
Lost love
Let’s be honest, almost everyone has that one lost love. It’s a great way to know each other’s past. I recommend then saying you’re grateful for that one person when it’s your turn to share what you’re grateful for. There’s nothing like thinking about the one who got away as your spouse/partner is sitting next to you.
Diet
Talk about how a new diet is working out for you or the diet you’re going to start tomorrow. It’s a great way to set the mood as soon as you’re about to start eating. Screw being grateful that you get to be with loved ones and focus solely on your body. Don’t forget to recommend the diet to the person next to you. Spread the word around!
Kiss, Marry, Kill
Who would you kiss, who would you marry, who would you kill? Now here’s the fun part: You can’t say you want to marry your current spouse/partner and have to choose another person at the table.
Black Friday Shopping
Who would you stampede over to get the last 90% off microwave you’ve been eyeing?
Targeting the Vulnerable
Some things to consider bringing up when you want the attention off you include asking the single person when they are getting a partner, the long-term relationship when they are getting engaged, and the newly-wed when they are expecting their first child.
For added flare, ask the grandparents who and what is in their will.
Let me know if any of these questions sparked lively conversations at your table. Happy Thanksgiving!
