Women ruled the 66th Grammy awards in February and they once again have taken the awards ceremony by storm, dominating in some of its top fields.
Beyoncé, who has been tied for the most nominated artist in history with her husband Jay-Z, scored 11 nominations, breaking the record and bringing her overall total to 99 over Jay-Z’s 88. She is also the artist with the most Grammy awards ever, with 32 Grammys. Beyoncé is nominated for Album of the Year and Best Country Album for “Cowboy Carter;” “Texas Hold ‘Em” is up for Record and Song of the Year, along with Best Country Song.
Nominees across categories face steep competition ahead of the Feb. 2, 2025 ceremony. Six of the eight nominees for Album and Record of the Year are women, including powerhouses such as Billie Eilish (“Hit Me Hard and Soft”), Taylor Swift (“The Tortured Poets Department”), Chappell Roan (“The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess”), Charli xcx (“Brat”) and Sabrina Carpenter (“Short ‘n Sweet”).
Eilish and Charli xcx, along with Post Malone and Kendrick Lamar, each have seven nominations. Swift, Carpenter and Roan each scored six. Swift is no stranger to the Grammys, scoring 14 total from 52 nominations and being the sole artist to win the coveted Album of the Year four times. These are the first nominations for Carpenter and Roan, who both scored nominations in all four general field categories: Album, Record and Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.
Other artists scoring their first-ever nominations include Carlisle, Mass. native Claire “Clairo” Cottrill, whose third album “Charm” is up for Best Alternative Music Album. Cottrill’s sold-out “Charm” tour recently made a three-night stop at Roadrunner.
Andre 3000 and Jacob Collier face the women who have been taking over the music industry in recent years, both also nominated for Album of the Year. The Beatles scored nominations for Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance for “Now and Then,” a 1977 recording restored via AI in November 2023. These are the band’s first nominations since 1997.
Rapper Doechii, known for her collaboration with Kodak Black on “What It Is (Block Boy),” not only scored her first nominations, but is the most-nominated female rapper at the upcoming ceremony. She will compete in the Best New Artist category; her mixtape “Alligator Bites Never Heal” is up for Best Rap Album and its single “Nissan Altima” in Best Rap Performance. Kaytranada’s remix of her song “Alter Ego” with rapper JT is nominated for Best Remixed Recording, non-classical.
The 67th annual Grammy Awards will be held at Crypto.com Arena and air on CBS and Paramount+.
