On November 5, Quadside was filled with voters when the Political Science/International Relations Liaison, Pre-law liaison, Student Government Association (SGA) and the Simmons chapter of Democracy Matters collaborated for an election night slumber party.
The event was filled with snacks and conversation, voters watching their beloved election night commentator and Boston University alum Steve Kornacki (and his khaki pants).
Jaclyn Geiger, SGA Representative for Democracy Matters said she hoped to stay the whole night. Attendee Harriett Seubert echoed Geiger’s thoughts that surrounding themselves with others during an overwhelming and historic election would ease anxiety.
“It’s stressful, but we’re all in this together,” said Seubert, a junior public health major who voted by mail from New York.
Lily Bryant, a junior psychology major who voted by mail from Connecticut, said to the Voice she was nervous, but being from a blue state provided her solace. She said she was “optimistic and hoping for the best.”
“It’s really good to be around a community of people who all have the same feelings, so it makes it feel better to be around other people,” said Bryant.
All three attendees emphasized self-care as their way of coping with the aftermath, whether or not the election goes in their favor.
“It’s nice to be here because we’re all in the same boat,” said Geiger in an interview with the Voice. “We’re all feeling the anxiety, but we’re in this as a team.”
Geiger said no matter how they turn out, election cycles are always hard on everyone. She said finding time to be with friends, family and other people who “get it” is key.
“Even if it goes to the worst, I still have my community and I feel good about being able to take action locally, and I have friends and a support group,” said Bryant. “I hope people everywhere also have a good support group around them.”
