Chicago native band Friday Pilots Club are equally as upbeat as they are charming. The band is a love child between the Arctic Monkeys’ album “Favourite Worst Nightmare” and the intimacy of The Backseat Lovers lyrics. They bring a unique yet familiar approach to indie rock and the band members’ chemistry is off the charts. To define Friday Pilots Club with a singular sound is impossible- but they are a band to look out for as they soar beyond the confines of smaller venues.
As I entered the venue, I could tell that I was in for a treat. Brighton Music Hall, built for 500 people, was sold out for the night and was crammed elbow to elbow. In any other situation I would be overwhelmed, but I knew that the murmurs of excitement and the tangible feeling of anticipation would make it worth it. With a quick scan of my ticket, I was in.
As soon as the band set up their gear and picked up their instruments, they were immediately on their A-game. Seasoned fans and first time concert-goers alike seemed to know the lyrics- especially to their hit songs such as “End of It”. Whether listeners were playing pool in the back room, getting a drink by the bar, or front and center, there was a sense of unity.
The lights flashed shades of orange, red and yellow, like the autumnal foliage outside of the venue.
The band’s energy was infectious, their connection with the crowd undeniable. Every riff and beat felt deliberate and full of purpose. The lead singer’s voice soared above the crowd, at times gritty and raw, and at others, smooth and hypnotic. Between songs, Friday Pilots Club made a point to connect with the eager sea of fans by checking in and injecting humorous banter into the set.
Midway through the set, they introduced a new seemingly unreleased song and despite it being unfamiliar, the crowd was hooked, swaying along to the rhythm as though it was an old favorite. This is where Friday Pilots Club truly shines. They take listeners on a journey, pulling them in with their emotional depth while still managing to keep things fun and lighthearted.
Friday Pilots Club delivered a performance that not only lived up to the hype but exceeded it. Their dynamic sound, magnetic stage presence, and clear passion for their craft left the crowd buzzing with excitement, ready to follow them as they continue to garner more and more supporters.
