Nearly seven months after the release of her third studio album “Don’t Forget Me,” Maggie Rogers has graced her fans with another single, “In The Living Room,” on October 8, 2024.
“This song was written shortly after DFM [Don’t Forget Me] in March 2023, and much like the album it’s a song about memory, about the people that haunt us, and the stories we tell ourselves as we create new realities,” Rogers shared with her fans on Instagram.
“In The Living Room” has a beat that makes you want to tap your foot and instrumentals to which you can’t help but dance around your room. Mixed with Rogers’ outstanding vocals, this song is a hit.
The lyrics, though, are particularly heart-wrenching, as Rogers seemingly sings about a past relationship. The song has a retrospective tone, as Rogers reminisces, “but I will always remember you / When we were dancing in the living room.”
The longing in Rogers’ voice can be heard throughout the entirety of the song. With the lines “but I remember sentimental sleepless nights / I set the table / And just waited / All along, I would have given / Every song I’ve ever written / Just to spend one day with you,” the listener is put in Rogers’ shoes and able to understand much she cared for the person she sings about.
Despite this relationship ending, perhaps not on the best note, Rogers often looks back and remembers this person, wondering if they ever do the same as she sings “you drew the line and pulled me under / But do you ever stop / To wonder about me?”
Rogers ends the song with “so in love and high on our own fumes / Oh, that’s how I will remember you,” wanting to remember this relationship for the good times, not the bad.
Rogers kicked off part II of her “Don’t Forget Me” tour on October 9 and will be making her stop at TD Garden in Boston on Thursday, October 17.
