Discovering new music has become increasingly easier with apps like Spotify and iTunes radio, but nothing beats a good, classic recommendation. If you’re tired of listening to Kanye or Beyonce while aggressively pedaling away on the elliptical or studying for an exam, here are five artists to check out.
Ryan Hemsworth
Hailing from Canada, Ryan Hemsworth has taken the DJ world by storm as an up-and-coming artist who has been able to skillfully mash up trap, R&B, and chill wave. His latest album “Guilt Trips” is mellow with enough dance beats in the background to keep your spirits up while doing work. Hemsworth has been referred to as “shy Diplo” and, if you take a look at his twitter, you’ll see that not only is he talented, his penchant for Pikachu-related products is quite adorable as well.
Ta-Ku
Inspired by the sound of J-Dilla, Nujabes, and Bauuer, Ta-ku blends the deep bass of trap and smooth rhythm of jazz into a true rendition of a hip-hop mashup. Although his latest album is titled “Song to Break Up To”, it definitely is not restricted to those circumstances. This album in particular is poignant in its use of instrumentals like crashing glass and its ability to pull the heartstrings of the listener. His ‘Drive Slow Homie’ remixes on soundcloud are also excellent tracks to play while cruising on the road.
Banks
Her sound is soothing, soft, and darkly romantic. Her single “Warm Waters” is sultry and will have you enraptured by her voice. LA singer Banks is currently on tour with The Weeknd, complementing their style with a seductive, shadowy edge and gripping lyrics. Her latest album “Waiting Game” reflects this enticing appeal and shows the subtle fragility and strength of her voice.
Last Dinosaurs
Looking for an alternative to Phoenix or Vampire Weekend? Last Dinosaurs is an indie pop group that has been largely under the radar and ought to be brought to the forefront with the likes of these artists. Funky, poppy, and exciting—they’re a great band to listen to on a Sunday off with no one home. The song “Andy” will certainly have you wanting to have an impromptu dance party.
Alunageorge
Aluna Francis and George Reid have been able to gain serious attention with their collaboration with the Brit Award winning artist Disclosure. Although their song “White Noise” with Disclosure has a large following, their album “Body Music” is just as amazing (not to be too hyperbolic or anything). The duo has been able to cultivate a sound that combines synth pop beats and ‘90s R&B for a funky, sweet, and irresistibly fluid listen.
