It hasn’t yet been a full year since the first Boston Calling, but already there have been two Boston Calling festivals.
The third, taking place on the weekend of May 23-25, has a promising lineup, including headlining artists Jack Johnson, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Death Cab for Cutie. Overall the festival hovers somewhere in the indie, alt-rock, and folk/folk-rock genres.
On Friday, there are three different artists and bands: singer-songwriter Cass McCombs, indie folk band Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, and Jack Johnson, known for songs like “Upside Down” and “Banana Pancakes.”
The Decemberists, an indie folk rock band possibly best known for songs “Don’t Carry It All” and “Down By the Water,” both songs from the 2011 album “The King is Dead,” were recently announced as the final addition to the lineup.
The Washington-based band The Head and the Heart will also be making an appearance on Saturday, so look forward to hearing some excellent piano and some really great vocals. Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls, known for “folk-punk” music and some excellent songs, such as “Recovery” and “Photosynthesis,” will also be performing.
Walk Off the Earth is a band known for its unique instrumentalization and creative covers—some of their better-known songs include covers of Gotye, Adele, and Lorde. Quin twins Tegan and Sara will also be present, so prepare to hear some fantastic songs, like “Closer” and “Walking With the Ghost.”
Other performers in Saturday’s lineup include Jenny Lewis, Warpaint, Maximo Park, and Magic Man. And even though in May it won’t exactly be “Sweater Weather,” The Neighbourhood will also be making an appearance.
Alt-rock band Brand New technically isn’t; they’ve been active since 2000. Matthew Houck, better known as Phosphorescent, will also be taking the stage on Sunday. Other Sunday performers include indie rock band Built to Spill, Kurt Vile and the Violations, Tigermanwoah!, and The Districts.
English rock band Bastille, arguably known best for their massively popular 2013 song “Pompeii,” are slated to perform Sunday as well.
Boston Calling will be taking place at City Hall Plaza, rain or shine. Tickets are on sale now; 3-day passes and weekend passes are now available, as well as 1-day and VIP tickets. Stay tuned for a promising Boston Calling, Take Three.
