Editorial: Government shutdown

The Simmons Voice Editorial Board decided not to do their job today because we’re mad at each other, and as a result there will be no editorial. Luckily, we’re still getting paid.

Just kidding. We would never be so unprofessional. Tell us, Congress, how is it that most state governments, including Massachusetts, can get along and keep their regions up and running, but you’re unable to do so? The State House is giving themselves a pat on the back for their ability to work together regardless of party, while DC is having extra happy hours to accommodate all the people who didn’t have to go to work today.

You had one job to do. You, Congress, are exhausting everyone with your nonsense. I don’t care what you do or what your policies are; they’re irrelevent at this point. The Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare, has already gone into effect. There’s an old adage we feel applies here: pick your battles. And it should be clear by now that you chose the wrong one.

It’s a sad day when a government can’t get past party lines to do something as simple as funding the government. So who among the U.S. government is going to stand up and be an adult about this?

We’re willing to bet that one party is going to pull away from this pathetic game of chicken last minute and end up looking like the heroes of the story. But the bigger question is how long this shutdown will last. Our photo editor needs to get her passport renewed, so she’d like to know.

The last government shutdown lasted 28 days and was due to similar reasons (disputes over funding for Medicare, environmental concerns, public health, and education).

While you squabble about the budget, the rest of the country still needs to continue to function. They are managing their budgets. Why can’t you?

Additionally, thousands of people were relying on this budget working in order for their budgets to work. Now, they are temporarily out of work and until you fix it.

So fix it!
