5 time wasting websites

By Eva Weber
Staff Writer

You wake up on a Sunday morning feeling well rested, or, like some of us college students, like you are just plain exhausted. Nonetheless, you know you’ve got a busy week ahead of you and today is the day to get a jump on that homework.
You get nice and comfy on your bed, or if you’re really determined, you blow the dust off your chair and sit down at your desk. It’s 2 p.m. and you’re ready to tear into your workload. But hold on a second, 2 p.m.?

Why, you’ve got some time to surf the internet for a little. Well, chances are that if you visit any combination of the following websites, the next time you look at the clock, it may be 11 p.m..

1. Reddit: Reddit is a is a social news and entertainment website cofounded by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian where users can submit content in the form of either a link or a text post. Other users, or “redditors,” then vote the submission up or down, to rank the post and determine its position on the site’s pages and front page.  The goal as a user is to have your content on the front page.
One can spend hours scrolling down the page clicking on different links on various “subreddits”  submitted from all over the world.

2. Tumblr: Tumblr is a microblogging platform and social networking website founded by David Karp and owned by Yahoo! Inc. which allows users to post text, images, videos, links, quotes, and audio to their tumblog. The service allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog. Users can follow other users’ blogs, as well as make their blogs private.
Tumblr is more of an artistic website where users can spend their time submitting their own pieces, or viewing the work of others. You may find yourself so inspired by others that you find yourself submitting some great stuff from your own blog rather than working on that 8 page paper due tomorrow.

3. YouTube: The time-wasting possibilities are endless on YouTube. You could spend years trying to watch every video posted relating to cats. There is something for everyone on YouTube, be it fanfic Harry Potter musicals, cooking lessons, movie trailers, or watching Jenna Marbles drunkenly pile makeup onto her face for your viewing pleasure.

4. Pinterest: This website is a pinboard-style social media website that allows users to create and manage theme-based photo collections such as events, interests, and hobbies.
Users can browse other pinboards for photos, “re-pin” photos to their own pinboards, or “like” photos.
The site was founded by Ben Silbermann, Paul Sciarra, and Evan Sharp. It used to be that anyone could browse the website, but now you must be logged in to view it. Not only can a person spend hours just browsing through the website, but they can also spend even more time working on their own projects that they found on the site.

5. Facebook: Many would agree that Facebook is one of the most time consuming websites for many reasons. Although you can spend your time catching up with friends and family around the world, there are so many other uses for the website now.
Any type of other social media website you visit today will most likely have a “share” button on the bottom, allowing you to share with your friends some of the cool things you’ve discovered. Or, if you were on Facebook to begin with, you may end up spending a lot of time reading articles or liking videos your friends have found themselves.

There are a number of other websites that you could spend days wasting your time on, but for the sake of your GPA, let’s just leave it to these.
