The Simmons Sci-Fi and Fantasy Club is the perfect place for nerds, geeks, and dorks of all kinds to hang out, play, and share their love for cult classic TV series, cartoons, movies, video games, and more. Meetings are held on Fridays from 5-6 p.m. in the Student Activities Conference Room.

Club president Jillianna Farietta was quoted as saying that the club’s goal is to “make a friendly and accepting environment for those with all kinds of interests in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, which are often looked down on by others.”

Each person’s ideas and opinions are treated with respect and all members of the club take an active part in choosing what the club does for each meeting and event.

Past meetings have included panels where members introduced everyone to a series they love, discussions of social issues in media, and games of Mafia, Werewolf, and Cards Against Humanity.

The club runs several events every semester including Extra-Life, a gaming marathon that benefits the Boston Children’s Hospital; movie screenings; video game break days; and a book club. Previous semesters of the book club have read both books and graphic novels, including “Nimona,” “Cinder,” “Monstrous Regiment,” and “World War Z.”

Members of the Simmons Sci-Fi and Fantasy Club are always looking to try out new things, which makes for a fun and active social environment, such as the improv murder mystery dinner party the club voted to hold last semester around Halloween.

Partygoers got to snack on candy and chips while the tried to solve the mystery of who stole Dr. Pirate’s booty and murdered Jake from State Farm. Was it Regina George? Was it Wendy Corduroy or the shark? And what was with all those Scooby Snacks?

This semester the club will continue to grow and develop inventive and exciting events. In the spring, Simmons Sci-Fi and Fantasy hopes to start playing Dungeons and Dragons (both beginners and dungeon masters are welcome), go to Anime Boston together, and hold a mock trial for a fictional character who might be Dumbledore, Darth Vader, or some other third guy.
