Letter to the Editor: It’s always sunny in Boston

To the Editor:

Did you happen to notice how well coordinated the first day of the semester was with the first nice day of the year all by chance?

The skies are blue and free of clouds; birds are singing; and the air feels near perfect in the mid 50s. In the past, most first days take off with tired eyes, a lack of enthusiasm and – like on most September and January days – cold air and dark, cloudy skies. But today, the entire campus is full of smiles, laughter and overall good moods despite the stress that is about to ensue.

Bad weather has done quite a job of proving itself to be far from motivational, and I think many agree that the best place to be on a rainy day is the couch while watching olds movies. This is why, as I travel from class to work, I find myself deep in thought about whether or not this weather is having a significantly positive effect on everyone’s mood.

If good weather really does increase our chances of being in a good mood, as many psychologists suggest, then today might just be the happiest start to a semester.

Maybe every semester should be scheduled to start on a sunny day. Maybe in my dreams.
